Landover, MD - In their inaugural season in the NEC, the Gardner-Webb Bulldogs claimed their first-ever Northeast Conference Women’s Swimming & Diving Championship, scoring 611 points, to outdistance its nearest competitor, Georgetown, by over 75 points. Central Connecticut State University and Georgia Southern tied for third place with 474 points each, while Wagner rounded out the top five team finishers with 416 points.
Gardner-Webb’s Terra Wilson (Potter Valley, CA/Deep Valley Christian) was named the Women’s Outstanding Swimmer & Rookie of the Meet after earning five gold medals over the weekend, including three individual awards and two in the relays. The rookie standout won the 50 yard freestyle (23.36) on Friday, 200 yard freestyle (1:49.92) on Saturday and closed out the championship with a win in the 100 yard freestyle (50.77) on Sunday night to help lead her team to victory. All three times established new NEC meet records and were also NCAA B qualifiers. She was a member of GWU’s winning 800 yard freestyle relay and 400 medley relay, while also earning a silver with the 200 yard freestyle relay.
Central Connecticut State’s Juliana DiPlacido (Mount Royal Quebec/Laurenhill Academy) earned NEC Outstanding Diver honors after winning the one meter dive (258.30 pts.) and placing second in the three meter dive (421.60). Gardner-Webb head coach Mike Simpson rounded out the major award winners, taking home 2004 NEC Coach of the Year honors.
Along with Wilson, the Bulldogs’ Kourtney Hamilton (Macogdoches, TX/Macogdoches) came through with a gold on Sunday night, taking top honors in the 200 yard breaststroke (2:26.94) after having earned a bronze in the 100 yard breaststroke (1:07.53) on Saturday.
Other event winners on day three of the NEC Women’s Swimming & Diving Championship included Katie Amaro (Shreveport, LA/Loyola Prep) of Georgetown in the 1,650 yard freestyle (17:27.50), Marina Shport (Brooklyn, NY/Fort Hamilton) of St. Francis (NY) in the 200 yard backstroke (2:04.98) and Amanda Kralovic (Balston Lake, NY/Shenendehowa) of Central Connecticut State in the 200 yard butterfly (2:05.77). The Blue Devils 400 yard relay squad of Lauren Klitzner (Andover, NJ/Lenape Valley Regional), Kralovic, Jaime Crowley (Plainville, CT/New Hampshire) and Joanna Bocer (Zielona Gora, Poland/LO VII) earned the gold in the last event of the evening to help propel CCSU into a tie for third place.
On the men’s side, Georgetown won the Northeast Conference Men’s Swimming & Diving Invitational with 760.5 points, followed by a second place showing by Virginia Military Institute with 728.5 points. After leading for the first two days, Florida A&M finished the meet in third place with 708 points, but swept the men’s major award categories, with Douglas Cross (Raleigh, NC/Millbrook) earning the Outstanding Swimmer Award, Gary Banks (San Jose, CA/Valley Christian) taking home Outstanding Diver and Luis Leon (Largo, FL/Seminole) winning the Rookie of the Meet award. Cross and Leon both won six gold medals, each taking two in individual events and four in relay events. Banks claimed both the one meter (260.55 pts.) and three meter (447.95 pts.) dives, while setting a meet record in the latter.
The Hoyas’ Kevin Walsh (Bethesda, MD/Saint Anselms) took home two gold medals over the weekend with a win in the 200 yard butterfly (1:56.91) on Sunday and 400 yard indivual medley (4:18.46) on Saturday. Other double gold medal winners on the men’s side for the weekend included St. Francis (NY)’s Erno Tekauer (Budapest, Hungary/Daniel Berzsenyl Secondary) in the 100 yard freestyle (46.90) and 50 yard freestyle (20.92) and Kevin Vik (Eagle River, AK/Chingiak) of VMI in the 1,650 yard freestyle (17:13.33) and 500 yard freestyle (4:54.09).
