Emmitsburg, MD -- Monmouth University captured its fourth Northeast Conference Women’s Outdoor Track and Field Championship on Sunday at the Morgan Track on the campus of Mount St. Mary’s College. The Hawks have now won four of the past five NEC Women’s Outdoor Championships. Earlier this year, Monmouth captured the NEC Indoor title.
The Hawks (172 points) beat runner-up Robert Morris (114) by 58 points to earn the victory. St. Francis-PA (111), Long Island (100), Sacred Heart (88.33), Fairleigh Dickinson (67), Mount St. Mary’s (49.66), Quinnipiac (47), Wagner (38), St. Francis-NY (17) and Central Connecticut State (14) rounded out the field.
Monmouth freshman Ashley Huffman won the long jump and the high jump while earning a team-high 30.5 points and was named the 2004 Most Valuable Performer and the 2004 Rookie of the Meet. Huffman also finished third in the 100m hurdles and ran the second leg of Monmouth’s 4x100m relay team that won with a time of 47.70s. Earlier this year, Huffman won the same awards at the NEC Indoor Track and Field Championship.
Robert Morris junior Nicole Downing won the discus and the hammer throw while finishing third in both the shot put and the javelin to earn 2004 Most Outstanding Field Performer honors. Downing took the discus with a winning throw of 41.24m. On Saturday, she won the hammer throw with a mark of 55.17m. On Sunday, she was third in the javelin with a mark of 42.99m while her third-place finish of 13.05m in the shot put was yesterday. Downing earned a meet-high 32 points.
Sacred Heart senior Katherine Wrinkle was named the Most Outstanding Track Performer after winning both the 5000m run and the 3000m steeplechase. Wrinkle took the 5000m run in a time of 18:04.75, 15 seconds better than the next finisher. In the steeplechase, Wrinkle won by 43 seconds with a time of 11:05.13.
Robert Morris sophomore Courtney Lenart broke the conference record in the javelin with a throw of 45.13m. The Colonials took four of the top five spots in the javelin to surge into second place.
Fairleigh Dickinson junior Roseann Hamilton won the gold medal in the 100m dash with a time of 12.28s while her teammate Renay McPherson took both the 200m (25.62) and the 400m (55.71) dashes. Sacred Heart’s Sara Tasber won the 800m run with a time of 2:15.20, Quinnipiac sophomore Kaitlyn Gwyther won the 1500m run (4:37.46) and Long Island’s Chioma Ukpai won the 100m hurdles with a tiem of 14.23 seconds. Monmouth’s Latasha Dickson won the 400m hurdles (1:03.20) with Melanie Loughlin (St. Francis-PA) taking the pole vault and Nicole Armfield (St. Francis-PA) winning the triple jump (11.93m).
Monmouth head coach Joe Compagni was named the NEC Women’s Coach of the Year.
Yesterday, winners included FDU’s Brianne Carmicheal in the shot put (14.30m), Quinnipiac’s Carolyn Robin in the 10,000m run (39:22.54), and Sacred Heart capturing the 4x800m relay with a time of 9:30.34 in the other final event.
