Landover, MD With 715 points, Gardner-Webb easily claimed its second consecutive NEC Swimming & Diving Championship crown.  Central Connecticut State finished in second with 556 points, followed by Wagner (548 pts.), Georgetown (468 pts.) and Georgia Southern (414 pts.) to round out the top five teams.  Four more meet records fell on the final day of the championship, bringing the total of records broke at this year’s NEC meet to 13 out of a possible 20 events.

CCSU’s Jaime Crowley (Plainville, CT/Plainville) earned the Outstanding Swimmer award, while teammate Juliana DiPlacido (Mount Royal, Quebec/Dawson) took home Outstanding Diver honors.  Co-Rookie of the Meet honors went to Wagner’s Jess Radka (Mohnton, PA/Holy Name) and the Blue Devils’ Lindsey Snyder (Winterport, ME/Bangor).  Mike Simpson was voted NEC Coach of the Year by his peers.

Crowley won the 200 breaststroke in a time of 2:19.63 to claim her third individual gold medal on her way to being named Outstanding Swimmer.  DiPlacido took home Outstanding Diver honors after winning the three-meter diving event with a meet record point total of 457.30 points on day three and claiming top honors in the one-meter event (253.90) on day one of the championship.  Snyder won the 200 yard backstroke in a time of 2:03.81 to help herself to a share of Rookie of the Meet accolades, after topping the field in the 100 yard backstroke (58.11) on day two of the meet. Wagner’s Radka shared co-rookie honors with Snyder after winning the 200 yard fly (2:04.72) on day three and taking top honors in the 100 yard butterfly with a new meet record (56.86) on day two.

Gardner-Webb’s Terra Wilson (Potter Valley, CA/Deep Valley Christian) won the 100 yard free with an NCAA B qualifying time of 49.95.  She totalled 57 individual points to help lead the Bulldogs to their second straight title in as many years since joining the league.  She was also part of GWU’s winning 400 freestyle relay squad that posted a new meet record of 3:29.68.  With a split of 49.94, her first leg of the relay broke her own previous mark in the 100 freestyle, which was established earlier in the night.  Heather Roka (Fort Myers, FL/Fort Myers) came in second in the 1,650 yard freestyle with a time of 17:03.08, while Whitney Hooley (Apple Creek, OH/Wooster) (200 back – 2:05.64) and Taylor Simpson (Boiling Springs, NC/Crest) (200 fly – 2:08.54) both earned bronze medals on the night and joined Wilson and Kathryn Williams (Greenville, SC/Eastside) on the podium for the gold in the 400 free relay.

Jen Lees (Pleasonton, CA/Arizona State)
