Quinnipiac Captures First NEC Baseball Championship With 7-3 Win Over Monmouth

5/16/2005

Quinnipiac won its first NEC Baseball Championship on Monday afternoon, downing Monmouth, 7-3, in the championship game played at FirstEnergy Park in Lakewood, NJ.  Monmouth had forced a seventh and deciding game on Sunday with an 8-2 win over the Bobcats.  In the title contest, Quinnipiac freshman third baseman John Delaney led a 13-hit attack by going 3-4 with three RBI.  Senior Mike Spahr went the distance for the Bobcats, allowing two earned runs on nine hits, while fanning three.  Quinnipiac sophomore rightfielder Ryan Rizzo was named Tournament MVP after he tallied 11 hits in four games and finished with a .550 average, three doubles and three RBI.  Quinnipiac will now represent the NEC as the league's automatic qualifier in the NCAA Tournament, which begins with regional play from June 3-6.
