Austin, TX -- The sixth-ranked University of Texas baseball team hit three home runs and scored eight runs in the third inning en route to a 20-2 win over Quinnipiac University in the opening round of the NCAA regionals on Friday, June 3 at Disch-Falk Field in Austin, TX. The Bobcats fall to 26-23 overall, while the Longhorns are now 46-14. Quinnipiac will now play Miami University (Ohio) on Saturday at 1:00 pm EST in an elimination game.
Quinnipiac got things started in the top of the first inning. Freshman John Delaney (Hanson, Mass.) hit the first pitch of the game into right field for a hit. Ryan Rizzo (East Northport, N.Y.) followed that up with an infield single and Tim Binkoski (North Haven, Conn.) reached on a catcher’s interference to load the bases. Delaney came around to score on a double play ball to make it 1-0.
Texas answered in its half of the first as Drew Stubbs walked and scored on a single by Seth Johnston. Quinnipiac starter Pat Egan (Rocky Hill, Conn.) got out of trouble by throwing an inning-ending double play to keep it tied 1-1.
Randy Gress (Shelton, Conn.) put the Bobcats back on top in the second as he cracked a homer, his fourth of the season, to left-center field making it 2-1.
Texas evened things up in the second as Will Crouch reached second after an error and scored on a single by Taylor Teagarden to make it 2-2 after two.
Texas took its first lead of the game in the third as they exploded for eight runs powered by three home runs in the inning. Stubbs singled up the middle to lead off the inning and came around to score on a wild pitch. Carson Kainer cracked a two-run homer to left center that scored Johnston, who singled to left. Two batters later Will Crouch cracked a two-run homer and three batters later Stubbs, who led off the inning hit a three-run home run knocking Egan from the game. Reliever Chris Gresh (Griswold, Conn.) came in and recorded the final out of the inning.
The Longhorns added two runs in the sixth inning as Kainer scored on a single by Crouch, who came home on a single by Nick Peoples to make it 12-2.
Texas scored eight runs - three earned - in the eighth inning off the Bobcats pitchers Tyler Brett (Waterford, Conn) and Paul Gibson (Center Moriches, N.Y.) to tack on some insurance.
Delaney was 3-for-4 with three singles and a run scored. Egan picked up the loss and falls to 7-5. He allowed 10 runs, six earned, on eight hits. Gresh pitched four and a third innings in relief and allowed two runs, both earned on six hits. Overall, the Bobcats committed six costly errors.
For Texas, Stubbs had three hits, including a double and a home run. Crouch added two hits, including a homer, while four other Longhorns had multiple hits. Starter Kenn Kasparek improves to a perfect 7-0. He went seven innings allowing two runs, one earned, on five hits.
