As the NEC celebrates its silver anniversary in 2005-06, we look back at the performers, performances and special moments that have helped define the conference over the last 25 years. Utilizing audio soundbites, NEC coaches, administrators, players and media who have been a part of the league over the last quarter century will reminisce about the games, people and moments that most stand out in their minds.
The NEC recently caught up with Kevin Southard, who served as director of sports information at St. Francis (PA) from 1983 through 1999.
A native of Scranton, Pennsylvania, Southard was responsible for the publicity and promotion of St. Francis (PA)'s 19-sport NCAA Division I program that served the needs of more than 350 student-athletes on a yearly basis. He was also the play-by-play voice of Red Flash men’s and women’s road basketball games for 16 seasons. In addition, he was president of the Northeast Conference Sports Information Directors and served as the director of the league’s men’s golf championships for a number of years.
Since November 1999, he has served as Sports Information Director/Assistant Athletics Director at The University of Scranton, an NCAA Division III institution that is a member of the Middle Atlantic States Collegiate Athletic Corporation, also known as the Middle Atlantic Conference.
In this interview, Southard looks back at his time at St. Francis and reflects on the early days of the NEC, as well as the evolution of the conference.
