Orlando, FL -- Led by individual champion Samantha Milosh (Aliquippa, PA/Center), who shot a tournament single-round record three-under par 69, St. Francis (PA) rallied on the final day of competition to earn its fourth NEC Women's Golf Championship in the last five years and sixth overall with a slim two-stroke victory over defending champion Long Island at Disney’s par-72 Lake Buena Vista Golf Course in Orlando, FL.
As a team, the Red Flash erased a nine-stroke deficit heading into round two play on Sunday, shooting 322 for a two-day score of 663. Long Island moved from third to second by carding a 319 on Sunday - the low round in the tournament - and 665 for the event. Monmouth, which led by nine shots at the start of play on Sunday, came in third (672), nine strokes off the pace. Wagner finished fourth (700), followed by Mount St. Mary's (702), Robert Morris (703), Sacred Heart (718) and Central Connecticut State (726).
Milosh, who shot a nine-over-par 81 in the first round on Saturday, shattered the previous 18-hole mark of 73 held by St. Francis (PA)'s Katie Thorne (2003) and Long Island's Shauna Wilde (2005). Her scorching round of 69 gave her a two-day total of six-over-par 150, the second lowest score in tournament annals and two shots ahead of runner-up Rae Johnson (Edgewater, NJ/St. Winifreds (Barbados)) of Monmouth (152). Long Island's Erica Chong (Hilo, HA/Hilo) took third with 157, followed by Robert Morris' Rachael Malenich (Alexandria, VA/Hayfield) (158) in fourth, and Long Island's Natalie Desjardins (Haileybury, Ontario/Ecole Secondaire Ste.- Marie) and CCSU's Leah Steinmiller (Wethersfield, CT/Wethersfield), who finished tied for fifth at 161.
Rounding out the all-conference team were Wagner's Alysse Sweeney (Wayne, NJ/Wayne Hills) in seventh (163), St. Francis (PA)'s Megan Schaeffer (Richland, PA/Eastern Lebanon) (166) in eighth and a three-way tie for ninth place between Monmouth's Rylee Plitz (Innisfail, Alberta/Innisfail) and Wagner teammates Caitlin Miller (Sutter Creek, CA/Amador) and Emily Noelker (Southbury, CT/Pomperaug), who carded 167.
Monmouth's Sherri McDonald was named NEC Coach of the Year for the second consecutive season.
St. Francis (PA), which won the inaugural NEC Women's Golf Tournament in 1998, has also claimed league titles in 1999 and 2002-04. The Red Flash now move on to NCAA regional competition from May 11-13.
