Sacred Heart won its first NEC Baseball Championship by topping Central Connecticut State, 10-8, in the championship game of the 2006 NEC Baseball Tournament, presented by Akadema, at FirstEnergy Park in Lakewood, NJ. In the title game, the Pioneers scored the first nine runs of the game and withstood a ninth-inning rally by the Blue Devils to clinch the victory. SHU shortstop Rob Tencza finished with two hits and drove in three runs, while Jeff Hanson and Jason Maiella finished with two RBI each. Pioneer first baseman Bobby McKee was named the Tournament MVP after batting .400 with four runs and five RBI. Sacred Heart will now represent the NEC as the league's automatic qualifier in the NCAA Tournament, which begins regional play from June 2-5.
