Orlando, FL - Sophomore Steve Foisy (Repentigny, Quebec/Academie Les Estacades) shot a 76 on Sunday at the par-72, 6,802-yard Palm Golf Course at Walt Disney World, after a tournament-low 72 on Saturday, to lead St. Francis (PA) to its first ever Northeast Conference Men's Golf Championship with a tight two-stroke victory over Quinnipiac.
The Red Flash shot 308 in the final round after firing a 302 on Saturday for a two-day score of 610. For the first time in league history, the same school has won both the men's and women's conference championship, with the St. Francis (PA) women capturing its sixth league title last Sunday at Walt Disney World.
Quinnipiac moved from sixth to second by carding a 295 on Sunday - the low round in the tournament - and 612 for the event. Long Island came in third with a 614, just four strokes behind the pace-leading Red Flash squad. Central Connecticut State finished fourth (619), followed by Monmouth (621), Sacred Heart (626), Mount St. Mary's (639), Robert Morris (642), Wagner (660) and Fairleigh Dickinson (665).
Foisy becomes the first St. Francis (PA) men's golfer since Eric Couture in 2003 to win the individual crown by topping a quartet of runners-up by two stokes. The second-place group includes Quinnipiac's Steve Velardi (Hamden, CT/Hamden), St. Francis (PA)'s Matt Gowdy (London, Ontario/A.B. Lucas), LIU's Matt Wilson (Toronto, Ontario/St. Andrew's Presbyterian College) and Quinnipiac Ian O'Connor (Syracuse, NY/Westhill), who netted a second-day low 72 on Sunday.
Rounding out the all-conference team were Sacred Heart's Ryan Leahey (Orange, CT/Amity/Housatonic C.C.), Monmouth's Ryan Beck (Maple Glen, PA/Hatboro-Horsham) and Central Connecticut State's Tim Buczak (Meriden, CT/Xavier) in sixth (151) followed by Mount St. Mary's Jordan Bertoglio (Orange, Calif./Servite) alone in ninth (153) and Robert Morris' Jimmy Tomaseski (Clifton, VA/Centreville), LIU's Greg Nicholson (Edinburgh, Scotland), CCSU's Matt McClure (Orangeville, Ontario/Westside Secondary) and the Monmouth duo of Anthony Campanile (Manahawkin, NJ/Southern Regional) and Dave Marshall (Glassboro, NJ/Glassboro) in a tie for tenth (154).
The St. Francis (PA) coaching staff was awarded NEC Coach of the Year honors. Assistant Coach Art Wurm accepted on behalf of the Red Flash.
St. Francis (PA) now moves on to NCAA regional competition from May 18-20 (site to be determined).
