Hackensack, NJ -- Fairleigh Dickinson University men’s soccer standout Tomer Chencinski (Thornhill, Ontario) has signed with Major League Soccer (MLS) team Toronto FC.
The 6-2 goalkeeper attended tryouts and was signed to a contract by the team. He has already completed the first stretch of training camp, which took place in Fort Lauderdale, FL. The team now has two weeks of training camp in Bradenton, FL followed by two weeks in South Carolina before the season begins on April 7. The Toronto FC opens at Chivas USA at 10:30 p.m.
Chencinski played at Fairleigh Dickinson for two seasons (2005-2006) after transferring from Robert Morris. In his first season as a Knight, he started eight games and logged over 827 minutes, allowing only eight goals for a 0.87 goals against average.
In 2006, Chencinski played in nine games and posted a 0.57 goals against average. He made 33 saves for an .868 save percentage. Over his two seasons, he collected nine wins and posted six shutouts in goal for the Knights.
“Obviously everybody in life strives to be a professional, whether it be in soccer or another field,” said Chencinski. “I’m looking forward to living in this environment and improving every day. I’m very excited about the opportunity in front of me and am looking forward to seeing what I can do with it.”
Toronto became the 13th Major League Soccer team, the first outside the United States, on May 11, 2006. Major League Soccer (MLS) is the premier professional soccer league, founded in 1996.
