ChampionsGate, FL -- Sacred Heart repeated as the NEC Men’s Golf Champion with a 54-hole total of 883 (295-297-291) on the par 72, 6,937-yard International Course at ChampionsGate Golf Club in Champions Gate, FL. As voted by his peers, head coach Ed Connolly garnered 2009 NEC Coach of the Year accolades for his efforts for the second consecutive year. The Pioneers head to NCAA Regionals to represent the league. Central Connecticut State (306-293-310=909) edged Long Island (292-303-315=910) by one stroke to claim second and third place, respectively. A single stroke also separated Robert Morris and Saint Francis (PA) as the Colonials took fourth with a 915 (306-304-305) and the Red Flash rounded out the top five with a 916 (299-309-308). In sole possession of the sixth slot was Fairleigh Dickinson (313-300-305=918), while Monmouth (302-304-314) and Mount St. Mary’s (305-307-308) shared seventh with team scores of 920. The ninth place squad was Quinnipiac (323-312--310=945), while Wagner (337-341-323=1001) and St. Francis (NY) (341-344-347=1032) rounded out the field of 11, respectively.
CCSU’s Eric Hawerchuk (Orangeville, Ontario) never relinquished his opening round lead as he concluded his sophomore championship outing with a 75 to finish with a four-under par 212 (68-69-75). Since earning individual medalist honors, Hawerchuk received an automatic bid to NCAA Regionals. Three strokes back was the quartet of SHU senior Matt Belizze (North Salem, NY/North Salem) (75-72-68), second-year Knight Robert Cerabone (Commack, NY) (72-72-71), SFPA junior Mike Magalski (Spring Grove, PA/Spring Grove) (69-72-74) and LIU senior Greg Nicolson (Edinburgh, Scotland) (70-67-78), each logging totals of 215 to finish one under and to round out the top-five competitors, respectively.
RMU junior C.G. Mercatoris (Brookville, PA/Brookville) earned sole possession of sixth place with an even 216 (68-73-77), while the Pioneer duo of rookie Leo Garcia (Guaynabo, Puerto Rico) and senior Patrick Fillian (Tinton Falls, NJ/St. Rose) finished seventh and eighth, respectively. Garcia fired rounds of 69-75-76 (220), while Fillian, last year’s NEC Golfer of the Year, compiled a 222 (75-74-73). Completing the top-10 on the individual leaderboard were the Mount’s Brad Gerick (Pylesville, MD/Nort Harford) and sophomore Blackbird Rocky Co (Richmond Hill, Ontario). Gerick carded a 223 (74-77-72), while Co totaled 225 (70-78-77). Co’s final-round 77 broke a two-way tie to take the last spot on this season’s championship all-tournament team.
Bryant participated in the tournament despite not being eligible for competition as they are in the process of a five-year reclassification period from Division II to Division I. The Bulldogs posted a 54-hole total of 896, while junior Jason Thresher (West Suffield, CT/West Suffield) finished two under par (72-72-70=214).
