Two student-athletes from Fairleigh Dickinson, Sacred Heart and Saint Francis (PA) comprise the 2010-11 Winter Scholar-Athlete award winners for the Northeast Conference (NEC). In addition to the scholar-athletes, the NEC also announced its winter Academic Honor Roll, consisting of 588 student-athletes, a 7.29 percent increase from last year. There were also 137 student-athletes - an 18.1 percent increase from a year ago - named to the Commissioner’s Honor Roll, which honors those with a 3.75 or better grade point average. All scholar-athlete award winners must have earned a minimum of 60 semester hours, maintained a minimum cumulative grade-point-average of 3.20 and participated with distinction as a member of a varsity team.

Fairleigh Dickinson senior forward Kamil Svrdlik (Prerov, Czech Republic/Tomas Beta) is the NEC Scholar-Athlete of the Year in men’s basketball. A three-year starter for the Knights, Svrdlik averaged 12.0 ppg and 7.1 rpg, while shooting 50.8 percent from the floor this past season. He ranked third in the NEC in blocked shots with 1.4 per game, and was also sixth in rebounding and seventh in field goal accuracy. Svrdlik was named the NEC Player of the Week on December 6. He finished his three-year career with 704 points and 416 rebounds. Off the court, the Prerov, Czech Republic native was named to the Capital One Academic All-District II first team this past winter. Svrdlik is a Mathematics major who carries a 3.46 grade point average.


Saint Francis (PA) senior guard Samantha Leach (Mount Sterling, OH/Miami Trace) is the winner of the NEC Scholar-Athlete award in women’s basketball. Leach was named the 2010-11 NEC Player of the Year and led the Red Flash to their second consecutive NEC championship. The three-time all-star led the league in scoring with 17.4 ppg, netting 20 or more points on ten occasions. Leach, who hails from Mount Sterling, OH, was deadly from beyond the arc, draining 61 trifectas on the year. She ranked second in the conference in three-point percentage (.433) and free throw percentage (.871), and sixth in made three-pointers (1.79 per game). Leach was a three-time NEC Player of the Week and was also named to the NEC All-Tournament team after averaging 20.0 ppg in the postseason. She ended her star-studded career as the fifth-leading scorer in program history with 1,624 points. A Capital One Academic All-District II first team honoree, Leach is also a member of the Saint Francis and NEC Academic Honor Roll. She maintains a 3.56 grade point average majoring in Elementary/Special Education.

Fairleigh Dickinson senior Tracy Ganjoin (Brick, NJ/Brick) claims Scholar-Athlete honors in women’s bowling. Ganjoin was a top performer for the Knights this season, who posted a 105-21 record, won their first-ever NEC Tournament title and advanced to the NCAA semifinals after being ranked first in the nation for much of the 2010-11 campaign. The southpaw was tabbed to the All-NEC first team for the second time in her career and earned NEC Bowler of the Week accolades four times. She posted a team-leading 212.1 average over the course of the year. During the Knights’ undefeated run through the eight-team NEC championship bracket, Ganjoin averaged 20.00 pins/frame. Two weeks later, she led the No. 1 seeded Knights at the NCAA Championships, posting the second-highest seven-game traditional average of all bowlers at the meet. The Brick, NJ product and member of FDU’s 2010 National Championship team, is a Management major who has compiled a 3.42 grade point average.

Saint Francis (PA) senior Hanna Yttring (Gothenburg, Sweden/Katrinelundsgymnasiet) earns the women’s swimming and diving NEC Scholar-Athlete award. A member of Saint Francis (PA)’s back-to-back NEC championship teams, Yttring finished second in the 400 individual medley, third in the 200 individual medley and eighth in the 100 freestyle at this year’s league meet in February. She also helped the Red Flash established new conference records in the 200 medley relay (1:44.53) and 400 medley relay (3:47.94). Recognized as a ten-time All-NEC honoree in just two seasons after transferring from Hawaii, Yttring ranks in the top-10 in nine different individual events at Saint Francis. She is the school record holder in the 100-yard butterfly and 200-yard individual medley, and is a member of four different school-record relay teams. Yttring hails from Gothenburg, Sweden and is majoring in Marketing/Management. Her grade point average is 3.88.

Sacred Heart junior Bertony Jean-Louis (Norwalk, CT/Brien McMahon) collects the NEC Scholar-Athlete award in men’s indoor track and field. For the second year in a row, Jean-Louis set a new league record in the 60-meter hurdles at the NEC Championships. He crossed the tape in 7.98 seconds to also establish a new school mark. Jean-Louis also finished fourth in the 60-meters and ran a leg on Sacred Heart’s second place 4x400 meter relay team. In early March, the Norwalk, CT native earned All-New England honors after placing second in the 60-meter hurdles with another program record time (7.89) at the New England Championships. He closed out his record-setting winter season by becoming just the fourth individual in school history to capture an individual title at the IC4A Championships. He was clocked in 7.79 seconds in his marquee event to take home All-East honors. Jean-Louis has posted a 3.49 grade point average and majors in Business.

Sacred Heart senior distance runner Kimberly DeLoreto (Hillsdale, NJ/Pascack Hills) earns her second Scholar-Athlete honor and first in women’s indoor track and field. DeLoreto won the 3,000 meters at the 2011 NEC Indoor Track & Field Championships in February, crossing the tape in 10:07.46. She also collected All-NEC second team honors by finishing second in the 5,000 meters (17:18.65). DeLoreto was the 2010 NEC Women’s Cross Country Scholar-Athlete of the Year and the 2009 NEC individual champion in cross country. She maintains a 3.92 grade point average majoring in Psychology.
