West Windsor, NJ -- The quarterfinal round of the 2012 Northeast Conference Tennis Championships offered little in the way of surprises as the top four seeds on both the men’s and women’s sides all advanced to tomorrow’s semifinal round. The tournament for the 12th straight year is being held at the Mercer County Outdoor Tennis Center in West Windsor, NJ.
With the sun shining bright and temperatures hovering the mid-70s, top-seeded Fairleigh Dickinson delivered a pair of dominant performances. The men stopped #8 St. Francis (NY), 5-0, behind the play of five-time NEC Rookie of the Week Arvis Berzins (Adazi, Latvia/Riga Centre Language School), who won 6-1, 6-2 in #1 flight play. The FDU women advanced by beating #8 Monmouth, 4-0. Junior Anna Rapoport (Moscow, Russia/#1239) won 6-0, 6-0 in her #1 flight match.
On the women’s side, the Knights will take on #4 LIU Brooklyn in Saturday’s semifinals. The Blackbirds tallied a 4-0 win over #5 Mount St. Mary’s on Friday as outstanding freshman Sanne Louwers (Nuenen, Netherlands/Mgr. Cuytenlaan) had little trouble in a 6-0, 6-1 victory at the #1 spot. The second women’s semi will pit Constitution State rivals as #2 Quinnipiac takes on #3 Sacred Heart. The defending champion Bobcats disposed of #7 Saint Francis (PA), 4-0. QU junior Rachel Cantor (Short Hills, NJ/Millburn) cruised to a 6-1, 6-1 win in #1 singles. Sacred Heart reached the semis by ousting #6 Robert Morris, 4-2. Pioneer freshamn Nicole Rydzewski (Maspath, NY/St. Francis Prep) came out on top of her #2 flight affair, winning 6-2, 6-0.
The men’s semifinals will showcase top-seeded FDU against #4 Mount St. Mary’s, a 4-2 winner over #5 seed and 2011 champion Sacred Heart in the day’s most competitive match. Clinching the win for the Mountaineers was #1 singles player Matt Blake (Garnet Valley, PA/Saleianum), who outlasted Sacred Heart’s Chadd Sullo (Orange, CT/Amity), 4-6, 6-2, 6-4. In the second semi, #2 Quinnipiac is set to face off against #3 Monmouth. The Bobcats blanked #7 Robert Morris, 4-0, with senior James Kwei (Dedham, MA/Dedham) providing the spark with a 6-2, 6-4, triumph at the #2 flight. Monmouth downed #6 Saint Francis (PA), 4-1, to move on to semfinal play on Saturday. MU freshman Freddy Marcinkowski (Sparta, NJ/Sparta) claimed a 6-1, 6-4 victory in his #1 flight outing.
Earlier in the day in women’s outbracket action, #8 Monmouth dropped #9 Wagner, 5-0, and #7 Saint Francis (PA) bested #10 St. Francis (NY), 4-0. Later, Wagner secured ninth place by beating St. Francis (NY), 4-0, in a consolation match. The Seahawks’ Lauren Hauer (North Attleboro, MA/North Attleboro) won at #4 singles, 6-0, 6-1.
In the lone men’s outbracket match, #8 St. Francis (NY) shutout #9 Wagner, 4-0. The Terriers received a 6-0, 6-3 win at the #3 position from junior Tita Mba (Silver Spring, MD/Mevick Bilingual).
Due to the threat of inclement weather on Saturday, matches have been reordered with the men’s semifinals beginning at 9:00 am, followed by the women’s semis (not before 11:30 am). Consolation matches will be contested throughout the day, with the first set match seto to go off no earlier than 11:30 am. The men’s and women’s championship matches culminate the three-day tournament on Sunday. The winners of both the men’s and women’s tournaments will receive the NEC’s automatic bids to the NCAA Tournament.
