NEC WOMEN'S SOCCER PLAYER & ROOKIE OF THE WEEK
Viktorija Miseljic, Fairleigh Dickinson
Fr., M, Nis, Serbia/Milenko Hadzic
Miseljic opened her collegiate career in a big way scoring three goals in two games over the weekend for the Knights. In a 3-2 overtime loss to Temple, Miseljic led her team back from a two-goal deficit to send the game into overtime. Her first goal came in the 71st minute when she converted a corner kick from teammate Jessi Reinhardt. With just 20 seconds left in regulation, she knotted the game at 2-2, finishing a Daria Jones feed from inside the six-yard box. Miseljic became the first Fairleigh Dickinson freshman to score in her college debut since 2013. The Serbian native added another goal in her team’s 3-1 victory over America East preseason favorite Hartford on Sunday. With the Knights ahead by a goal, the freshman showed off her speed outrunning Hartford defenders to secure a through ball and finish far left post in the 38th minute for the eventual game-winner. Miseljic now leads the NEC in goals after the first weekend of the season.
NEC WOMEN'S SOCCER DEFENSIVE PLAYER OF THE WEEK
Ashley Cavanaugh, Central Connecticut
Jr., GK, Belchertown, MA/Belchertown
In CCSU’s 3-0 win over Atlantic 10 foe UMass, Cavanaugh anchored the Blue Devil defense stopping all five shots in Friday’s season opener. It was the junior netminder’s fourth career shutout.
NEC PRIME PERFORMERS
CCSU freshman midfielder Jenna Rae Covello (Plymouth, CT/Terryville) wasted no time breaking into the stat sheet in her collegiate debut scoring two goals in a 3-0 win over UMass on Saturday.
CCSU junior forward Danielle Pearse (Seaford, NY/Seaford) netted a goal while adding one assist in the aforementioned victory over the Minutemen.
Bryant’s junior Alison Guilmette (Coventry, RI/Bay View) recorded three points in a 3-0 win over Rhode Island in the Bulldogs’ season opener on Friday. Both her goal and assist came just 11 minutes into the action allowing her team to take control early.
Wagner sophomore goaltender Delaney Beck (Bakersfield, CA/Garces Memorial) came forward to convert the golden goal, a 39-yard free kick in overtime that allowed the Seahawks to knock off Delaware State, 2-1, on Sunday. She also recorded eight saves in Wagner’s two games over the weekend.
Mount St. Mary’s junior forward Sarah Harmon (Somerset, NJ/Bishop George Ahr) recorded three points in a 3-1 win over Loyola on Friday. Harmon netted the game’s first goal, and then assisted on her team’s third tally of the game to seal the victory.
