NEC Quintet Named To All-Met Hoops Teams

5/1/2019

Tarrytown, NY -- It was a good night for NEC hoopers at the annual Haggerty Awards dinner on Tuesday in Tarrytown, NY.

The annual event, sponsored by the Metropolitan Basketball Writers' Association (MBWA), honors the best-of-the-best from the NY metro area in all three divisions.

Fairleigh Dickinson sharpshooter Darnell Edge (Saugerties, NY/Saugerties) was tabbed to the MBWA first team after leading the Knights to the NEC title last March. LIU Brooklyn's Raiquan Clark (New Haven, CT/Hillhouse) and St. Francis Brooklyn's Amy O'Neill (Melbourne, Australia/Catholic Ladies' College) collected second team honors. Sacred Heart's Katherine Haines (Ridgefield Park, NJ/Ridgefield Park) and Sean Hoehn (Morristown, NJ/Morristown (St. Thomas More)) were both named to the third team.

Edge garnered the first team nod after leading the Knights on a historic run which included an NEC Regular Season Championship, NEC Championship and NCAA Tournament appearance. The senior guard, who will be recognized at the 86thannual MBWA Awards Dinner on Tuesday, April 30, propelled the Knights to the program's first-ever NCAA Tournament victory by scoring a career-high 33 points in the team's win over Prairie View A&M.

The senior guard becomes the the Knights' first All-Met First Team honoree since Rahshon Turner was named to the team in 1998. He is also the third Knight to garner All-Met honors in Greg Herenda's tenure.

"Darnell has done something that no FDU player has done in decades and he is extremely deserving of this prestigious award," said Herenda. "Darnell came to Fairleigh Dickinson as a bright-eyed 17-year old and leaves as a two-time NEC Champion, who helped lead us to our historic NCAA Tournament victory. There is no player that I have coached in my 35 years that has worked harder to realize all of his goals. We are all so very proud of Darnell and all of his accomplishments."

The Saugerties, New York native, who was named All-NEC First Team along with NEC Tournament MVP and NABC All-District First Team, averaged 16.6 points, 3.5 rebounds and 2.4 assists, while shooting 47.3 percent from the field, 47.7 percent from three-point range and 89.4 percent from the line. Edge finished the season ranked third in the nation in three-point percentage and ninth in free throw percentage.
