Wagner's Cam Gill And Chris Williams Sign NFL Contracts

4/26/2020

Staten Island, NY - Wagner College All-American linebacker Cam Gill and defensive tackle Chris Williams have found their new homes in the National Football League.

Gill signed as an undrafted free agent with the Tampa Bay Buccaneers on Saturday, while Williams inked a free agent deal with the Indianapolis Colts.

Gill and Williams become the first defensive players to break through to the NFL since linebacker Najee Harris signed a free agent contract with the Oakland Raiders in 2017.

Wagner was already the only Northeast Conference (NEC) school with two active players in the NFL during the 2019-2020 season in Buffalo Bills linebacker Julian Stanford and offensive tackle Greg Senat, who went on to win the Super Bowl with the Kansas City Chiefs earlier in February.

The Buccaneers, who made headlines by signing quarterback Tom Brady and tight end Rob Gronkowski in the offseason, picked up seven defensive players, three via draft and four via free agency, with Gill being one of three new linebackers.

Apart from drafting four defensive players, the Colts also traded their first round pick in the 2020 Draft for defensive tackle DeForest Buckner. Williams becomes one of three defensive linemen the Colts signed after the draft.

Gill finished his Seahawk career as one of Wagner's most decorated players ever, as he was recently named a STATS FCS First Team All-American, Hero Sports FCS Second Team All-American, Associated Press Third Team All-American, and All-ECAC First Team selection, while playing in the Prestigious East-West Shrine Bowl. The Douglasville, GA native became the fifth player in NEC history to repeat as the league's top defensive player and finishes his collegiate career as the conference's all-time sack leader with 34 career sacks. This season, the dynamic outside linebacker led the league with 9.5 sacks while accumulating 20 tackles for loss and 60 overall stops in 12 games. Gill also received an invitation to compete in the NFLPA Collegiate Bowl while finishing as a finalist for the FCS' Buck Buchanan Award, the top defensive player in the country.

A strong playmaker in the middle of Wagner's defense, Williams earned his second consecutive All-NEC honor and first appearance on the first team in 2019. Williams jumped on the scene for NFL scouts earlier this year, when he participated in the prestigious East-West Shrine Bowl alongside his teammate Cam Gill. Williams dominated opposing offensive lines all season, finishing with 62 tackles, including four sacks and 11.5 tackles for loss. Williams recorded two sacks in Wagner's victory over LIU on September 28 and led the Green and White with 11 total tackles in the season-opener at FBS member UConn.
