College Park, MD -- LIU snuck out with the win on a goal scored with 1:17 left to play in the game, on a beautiful shot from sophomore Assane Ben Fall, and will take on #10 seed Saint Louis, Sunday, November 21 at 3 p.m. ET.

The game was a rainy one, and slow to start. LIU didn't register any solid shots in the first half, while Maryland was able to get five off. Goalie Demetri Skoumbakis made three saves in the first to keep it 0-0 at the halftime break.

A different LIU squad took the field in the second half, immediately putting the pressure on their Big Ten opponents, and keeping it on. Sophomore forward Emil Jaaskelainen had a great shot in the 58th minute, forcing the Terrapin goalie to make a huge save. Jaaskelainen was there for the rebound, but his second shot hit the top crossbar.

Sophomore forward Assane Ben Fall also had a shot in the final five minutes, that hit the side of the net, and it seemed like the Sharks had taken their two best chances.

Maryland also had some very strong chances in the last 10 minutes of the game, including a corner kick, a shot that just went wide, and then in the final three minutes, an open shot in front of the net. Skoumbakis made a ridiculous save, his fifth of the game, and the two teams were still knotted, 0-0 with 90 seconds to go.

In the 88th minute, Fall broke away on the left side of the field. He one-touched it back to catch his defender off guard, and launched a shot from outside the top left corner of the box. The ball arced beautifully, landing in the back right corner of the net, giving LIU the 1-0 lead with 1:17 to play.

The Sharks kept their cool as the clock wound down, managing Maryland's final attempts to score, and took the win, 1-0. It's the first NCAA tournament win for LIU men's soccer since 1982, and the prorgram's 13th overall.

LIU is now 12-4-4 on the season, and advances to the second round of the NCAA College Cup, where they will take on #10 seed Saint Louis, who had a first round bye. The Sharks will face off against the Billikens, Sunday, November 21 at 3 p.m. ET in Saint Louis, Missouri. It will be streamed live on ESPN+.
