Although it occurred in a non-traditional order, Wagner has captured the conference’s indoor, cross country and outdoor championships in succession. The Seahawks won their first-ever NEC XC team title in 2019 and followed up with the program’s first-ever NEC indoor championship in February 2020. COVID-19 forced the cancellation of the 2020 NEC Outdoor Championships, but Wagner immediately returned to its winning ways once competition resumed in 2021. Stasi’s crew won its second cross country crown this past February and the program’s first-ever outdoor team title came 63 days later. Wagner won the meet with 165 points, finishing 37 points ahead of runner-up Central Connecticut. Mount St. Mary’s (115) took third place in the team standings. The conference’s top-ranked distance squad was a driving force behind Wagner’s history-making weekend at Bryant, which was hosted the annual championship meet for the first time. Robert Guidicipietro completed the grueling 10K-5K double by snaring two gold medals. He also ran the third leg on Wagner’s second-place 4x800m relay team. For his efforts, Guidicipietro, who totaled 22 team points, captured the NEC Most Valuable Performer (MVP) Award and the NEC Most Outstanding Track Performer (Distance) honor. In addition to Guidicipietro’s golds, Wagner collected a silver medal in the 1500m and picked up bronze medals in the 800m, steeple chase and 5,000m runs. After Lutfi Pocesta provided 10 points to the Seahawks’ tally by winning the hammer throw on Saturday, Wagner’s Michael Pepe set the championship meet record in the discus. Pepe out-classed the field with a 55.73m (181’ 10”) heave. Saint Francis U freshman Nickolas Hyde earned the title of NEC Most Outstanding Field Performer (Throws). The outdoor rookie won the shot put on Saturday and earned a bronze medal on Sunday’s discus competition. Hyde, who also secured the NEC Most Outstanding Rookie Performer award, was the fourth-place finisher in the hammer throw. Central Connecticut’s Miles Fye-Moore completed an impressive weekend in the sprints. After settling for second place in the 100m dash, the Blue Devil won the 200m dash. Fye-Moore also anchored CCSU’s gold medal-winning 4x100m relay squad en-route to earning the NEC Most Outstanding Track Performer (Sprints) award. Accounting for 21 points, Mount St. Mary’s Dylan LaNoue earned silver medals in the long jump and high jump to go along with a fourth-place triple jump finish. LaNoue, who won the 2020 NEC Indoor MVP award, captured the NEC Most Outstanding Field Performer (Jumps) honor.
