Philadelphia, PA -- It may have been years in the making, but it was worth the wait for the Saint Joseph's program and its legions of fans on Hawk Hill.
The top-seeded Hawks capped a perfect conference campaign on Saturday, defeating third-seeded Hobart, 14-7, in the NEC final on a rainy Saturday afternoon in Philadelphia.
The win gave six-time NEC regular season champion Saint Joseph’s (14-3) the program’s first-ever NEC Tournament title.
"It feels really, really good, I have to say," said six-time NEC Coach of the Year Taylor Wray of Saint Joseph's. "Just so pleased to be here and have this first championship. The team has bought in all year and dealt with adversity, There have been so many people who were a part of this to help get us to where we are. I'm just incredibly thrilled."
NEC Tournament MVP honors went to Saint Joseph’s junior goalkeeper
Robbie Seeley (Marcellus, NY/Marcellus), who stopped 27 shots in two games, including 16 in the final.
Saint Joseph’s took an early 2-0 lead in the first quarter, getting goals from
Tucker Brown (Rehoboth Beach, DE/Worcester Prep) and
Levi Anderson (Calgary, Alberta/Crescent Heights) just 24 seconds apart.
Hobart (7-6) would answer when
Derrek Madonna (Syracuse, NY/Easy Syracuse-Minoa) scored on a man-up opportunity at the 8:00 mark of the first quarter.
All-Tournament attack
Carter Page (Peterborough, Ontario/The Hill School) would score the first of his four first half goals on a man-up opportunity with 2:26 remaining in the opening frame. The goal was his single-season program record 45th of the year.
Saint Joseph’s would tack on the last four goals prior to intermission - including two from Page - to take a commanding 9-3 lead into halftime.
After Hobart scored first in the third frame, SJU’s leading scorer during the regular season, junior attack
Matt Bohmer (Charlotte, NC/Charlotte Catholic), recorded his first tally of the tournament to cap a three-goal spurt to put the Hawks up 12-4.
The Statesmen pulled within 12-6 with 7:06 to play on Madonna's fourth of the game, but would not score agin.
Page led all players with five goals for the Hawks and Madonna's four goals topped the Statesmen.
Brown added three tallies for the Hawks, while Anderson and Bohmer each scored twice.
