FAIRFIELD, Conn. – The Pios, who earlier today defeated Wagner 1-0 to capture their second-ever NEC Tournament Championship, will play in their first NCAA Field Hockey Tournament in 18 years when they travel to Chapel Hill, N.C., on Wednesday to face William & Mary (11-8) in the preliminary round.

Sacred Heart (9-10), led by eighth-year head coach Sydney Van Der Merwe, square off against the CAA champs with hopes of facing the host and No. 1 seed North Carolina on Friday in the first round.  

SHU last played in the national tournament in 2005, a 7-2 loss at Richmond that followed the Pios' first conference tournament title.

The tournament consists of an 18-team field, with 10 spots going to automatic qualifiers and the remaining eight teams chosen at large by the NCAA selection committee. The opening round games will be played at two of the four first- and second-round host sites, with the semifinals and finals hosted by North Carolina.

Here is the schedule of the 2023 NCAA Division I field hockey tournament, including dates and locations:

• Opening round: Wednesday, Nov. 8 at campus sites
• First round: Friday, Nov. 10 at campus sites
• Second round: Sunday, No. 12 at campus sites
• Semifinal: Friday, Nov. 17 at Karen Shelton Stadium at North Carolina
• National championship: Sunday, Nov. 19 at Karen Shelton Stadium at North Carolina
