Brookville, NY -- With a team effort on defense, Sacred Heart University earned at least a share of the NEC regular season title with a 7-6 win at LIU on Saturday.

The Pioneers also claimed the top seed in the NEC Tournament and will serve as host of the event on May 4 & 6.

The regular season crown is the first for SHU since the 2012 season and fourth in school history.

SHU improved to 7-0 in NEC play and can win the regular season championshio outright with a win over Merrimack next Saturday.

In a battle of NEC contenders, the first half went through three ties and three lead changes. In the third quarter, SHU senior Sydney Colesworthy found Shae Insinga for the goal that sparked a 3-0 run and pushed SHU to a 6-3 lead.

LIU scored at the 6:24 mark but sophomore Maci Black's goal with 33 seconds left kept SHU in front going into the fourth quarter.

The Sharks tallied back-to-back goals to make it a one-score game at 7-6.

LIU had a chance to tie on a free position with 31 seconds left, but graduate student Claire McElhenny was there to cause the turnover to help the Pioneers secure the victory.

McElhenny won a career-high 10 draw controls.

Graduate student Lydia Werlau notched a goal to tie Carissa Hauser for the DI program record with 220 career points.

Sophomore Lisa Martin collected a season-high 11 saves.
