West Windsor, NJ -- On a sun drenched Championship Sunday, a pair of NEC tennis champions were crowned, each weaving their own compelling story.
The LIU women's program went from being an all-time great NEC women's program to THE greatest program. The second-seeded Sharks won their record-breaking eight conference title, turning away longtime rival FDU with a 4-2 win over the fourth-seeded Knights.
The men's side saw a new chapter unfold as league newcomer Binghamton claimed its 11th conference championship, but first as member of the NEC. The top-seeded Bearcats finished off a dominant weekend of play with a 4-1 conquest of a rising Saint Francis U program. The third-seeded Red Flash were making their first conference title appearance since 2017.
After two days playing primarily indoors, the finalists and fans were treated to a goregous day at the award-winning Mercer County Tennis Center, which served as tournament host for the 23rd straight year.
The morning started with the battle between a pair of NEC charter members. LIU would start off on the right fin and take the doubles point with wins at the #1 (6-1) and #2 (6-3) flights.
Saki Oyama (6-3, 6-3) and
Clara Tardivel (6-0, 6-1) kept the momentum going from doubles play as they secured singles wins from the #2 and #6 spots. FDU fought back to take two singles match of their own with victories by #3
Mireia Turro (6-2, 6-2) and #4
Namie Isago (6-4, 6-3). Competing in a hotly-contested match, reigning NEC Player of the Year
Leo Boisseau and FDU's
Alena Kubanova battled in a #1 flight showdown that went the distance. Boisseau won the first set 6-3 before Kubanova brought the firepower to win set two, 6-0. Boisseau would prevail in the final set, 6-3, to clinch the championship victory. Boisseau, who hails from Levallois, France, was named NEC Tournament MVP.
LIU's record eighth title win broke a tie with Mount St. Mary's, which won seven titles. FDU has won six championships, the same number as Quinnipiac. The Sharks have now captured six of the last seven NEC and eight of the last ten women's tennis crowns. This trophy hoisting was the first at LIU for head coach Chad Davis, who took over the reigns this season after a long run helming the St. Francis Brooklyn program.
The second championship match of the day brought a similar level of excitement.
In doubles play, Binghamton and SFU split the #1 and #2 doubles matches, leading to high drama at #3 doubles. SFU's
Alan Gonzalez and
Kevin Kruzel faced a 5-2 deficit in their match but were able to mount an incredible comeback to win 7-6 (7-3) and secure the doubles point for the Red Flash. Forced to play from behind for the second straight day, the Bearcats did not waver. The top-seed came out firing on all cylinders in singles play and won four straight singles matches to take home its first-ever NEC Tournament title.
William Binnie (7-6, (3-0), 6-4),
Zubin Omar (6-3, 6-4) and
Kyle Weekes (7-5, 6-3) all won in straight sets, setting the stage for #6 singles. With all eyes on the Auckland, New Zealand native,
James McPherson won an exhilarating three-set match to clinch the title (7-5, 4-6, 6-0) for head coach Nick Zieziula and co.
Weekes, who went 3-0 over the three-day event, was named NEC Tournament MVP.
Both the Sharks and the Bearcats will go on to represent the NEC in their respective upcoming NCAA Tournaments.
The men's field will be announced on Monday, April 29 at 6:00 pm ET and the women's announcement will follow on the same day at 6:30 pm. Both selection shows can be streamed on NCAA.com.
