New York, NY -- No. 26 Michigan ended Binghamton's historic men's tennis season with a 4-0 victory in an NCAA first round match Friday morning at Columbia's Milstein Family Tennis Center. The Bearcats (16-10) were making their first NCAA appearance in 11 years and first as Northeast Conference champions.

The Big 10 runnerup Wolverines (17-12) captured the doubles point with wins at Nos. 2 and 3 and took the first three completed singles matches to advance to Saturday's second round.

Binghamton's top doubles pair of sophomores William Morais Binnie and James McPherson were deadlocked with Michigan's 23rd-ranked duo, 5-5, when their match was halted after UM clinched the doubles point.

In singles, Binnie and freshman No. 2 Filipe Costa were battling in tight second sets when Michigan wrapped up the match.

"I was confident we could give ourselves changes in the doubles and we did," head coach Nick Zieziula said. "We competed well in doubles and stuck to our principles. In singles, Michigan stepped up, raised their level and showed how they were able to knock off the ninth, 18th- and 19th-ranked teams this year. We learned a lot this season and grew a ton as a team. We bring everyone back next year and will get better from this experience."
