Bridgewater, NJ -- There’s been a bit of shake up in the world of Northeast Conference (NEC) Indoor Track and Field as NEC Coaching Staff of the Year honors are heading back to Staten Island and New Britain once again but in the hands of different squads.
After claiming the accolades on the women’s side for the past three years, longtime Central Connecticut head coach
Eric Blake and his staff collected the men’s honor for the first time since 2018 and third overall. On the women’s circuit, Wagner’s
Joe Stasi and his staff, the winners of the previous four men’s awards, earned the women's distinction for the first time in program history.
The Coaching Staff of the Year award winners were selected by a vote of the league’s head coaches. In addition, the conference’s men’s and women’s All-NEC first and second teams were announced, along with the All-Rookie squads.
The Blue Devils captured their first NEC indoor crown since 2018, spoiling Wagner’s quest for five in a row. Earning its first-ever title in 2011, CCSU now has three to its program’s name with all of them coming under the tutelage of Blake.
CCSU has also claimed conference titles at the past two NEC Cross Country and NEC Outdoor Track and Field championships.
The Blue Devils earned majority of their points in the track at this winter's indoor meet, claiming three gold medals and four silver in the distance events along with taking home a pair of golds and a bronze in the sprints. CCSU also earned gold medals in both relays to end the meet.
In the throws, CCSU notched two second place finishes and a bronze medal to add to its point total of 179, which set a new meet record.
CCSU also brought home a haul of major individual awards as Greyson Golda won Most Outstanding Rookie and Most Outstanding Field Performer (Throws), while Samuel Whittaker claimed the Most Outstanding Track Performer (Distance) honor for the second time in as many years.
On the women’s side, Stasi and the Seahawks made history winning the program’s first-ever NEC indoor title.
Wagner racked up majority of their meet-record 176 points on the track and in the jumps. The Seahawks tallied 10 total medals in the running events, comprised of five gold, three silver and two bronze. In the jumping pits, they went back to Grymes Hill with one medal of each kind.
Senior Ruth-Ann Chambers was the tabbed the meet’s Most Valuable Performer and Most Outstanding Track Performer (Sprints) after compiling first-place finishes in the 60m hurdles, 60m dash, 500m run and 4x400m relay, along with placing fourth in the 200m dash.
Freshman Mia Petersen was named the Most Outstanding Field Performer (Jumps) by virtue of winning gold in the long jump and bronze in the triple jump.
The All-Conference first and second teams were composed of the first and second-place finishers in each event. For the men, CCSU led the way with 13 All-NEC picks while the Seahawks led the women with 10 honorees.
All-Rookie squads consisted of the highest-finishing rookie in each event. FDU and Stonehill led the way with four picks apiece on the men’s side. In its NEC indoor championship debut, the Chicago State women tallied the most All-Rookie selections with five.
