West Windsor, NJ -- Milestones were reached and titles secured on NEC Tennis Championship Saturday as Binghamton repeated as men’s champion and FDU reclaimed its spot atop the women’s podium on an unseasonably steamy afternoon at the Mercer County Tennis Center in West Windsor, NJ.

The Bearcats, seeded fourth, became the lowest seed ever to capture the NEC men’s tennis title, registering a 4-1 victory over third-seeded LIU in the first final in league history without a No. 1 or No. 2 seed. Under head coach Nick Ziezula, Binghamton has now gone back-to-back, winning the NEC crown in each of its first two seasons as a conference associate. The title capped a postseason run that saw the Bearcats edge Saint Francis U in a 4-3 quarterfinal thriller, stun top-seeded FDU in the semis and put the bite on the Sharks in Saturday’s final.

On the women’s side, FDU added another chapter to its championship tradition. Behind first-year head coach and Hall of Fame men's program alum Alex Cole, the top-seeded Knights defeated second-seeded Saint Francis U, 4-1, to capture the program’s seventh NEC title, tying for the second-most all-time and pulling within one of LIU’s league record. The victory marked FDU’s first conference crown since 2016, as the Knights held off an SFU squad making its first appearance in the NEC final.

Binghamton opened the day by securing the doubles point, as the duo of William Morais Binnie and Ronin Lotlikar posted a 6-3 win at No. 1, while James McPherson and Kyle Weekes delivered a 6-2 victory at the No. 2 flight.

Carrying a 1-0 lead into singles play, the Bearcats wasted no time building on their advantage. Filipe Costa set the tone with a commanding 6-0, 6-0 win at No. 3 to extend the margin. The two teams then traded results, with LIU’s Philip Hilble earning a 7-5, 6-4 win at No. 2 and Binghamton’s Zubin Omar responding with a 6-2, 6-3 victory at No. 6.

With the Bearcats holding a 3-1 lead, attention shifted to the marquee matchup at No. 1, where two of the NEC’s best - Binghamton’s Morais Binnie and LIU’s Leon Harder - were locked in a battle. Morais Binnie took the opening set, 6-2, and sealed the championship with a 6-4 win in the second.

The women’s doubles point set the tone for the day, with all three matches going back and forth in tightly contested battles. FDU’s Valentina Silva and Katsiaryna Kostsina struck first with a 6-4 win at No. 3, and the Knights clinched the point after Anastasia Lim and Alena Kubanova outlasted SFU’s Reagen Mangan and Sara Jankovic, 7-5, at No. 2.

FDU took that momentum into singles play, making an early statement on the same court bank. Yelena Kim cruised to a 6-1, 6-1 victory at No. 4, and Kubanova followed with a 6-2, 6-4 win at No. 3, pushing the Knights to the brink of the title.

SFU’s top player, Diana Zuba, answered for the Red Flash, grinding out a 7-6 (6), 6-3 win over rival Namie Isago at No. 1 to keep her team’s hopes alive.

But at No. 6, Kostsina had the final word. After edging SFU’s Morgan Tuffs in a first-set tiebreak, Kostsina shifted into high gear, closing out the match, 7-6 (4), 6-1, and sparking a raucous championship celebration for the Knights.

Both Binghamton and FDU will now shift their focus to the NCAA Tournament, where they will represent the NEC on the national stage.
