NEC championship game
#1 ST. FRANCIS (PA) 74, #3 WAGNER 49:
St. Francis (PA) senior forward Mary Markey (Neelyton, PA/Southern Huntingdon) scored a game-high 25 points and sophomore forward Jen DeFilippo (Bethel Park, PA/Bethel Park) came off the bench to add a career-high 21 points and 10 rebounds to lead the Red Flash to the 74-49 win over Wagner on their home court. The win gives St. Francis (PA) its third-straight NEC Tournament title, and its third consecutive appearance in the NCAA Tournament. The score was tied at 22 apiece in the first half, but the Red Flash broke away with a 12-6 run to take a 34-28 lead at halftime. St. Francis (PA) blew the game wide open with a 13-5 run in the opening seven minutes of the second stanza to take a 47-33 lead. That lead eventually grew to 30 points, 72-42, before the Red Flash settled for the 25-point win. Wagner shot 19.4% from the field in the second half, and were outrebounded in the game 44-39. The Seahawks were led by senior guard Susan Moffat (Branchburg, NJ/Somerville), who scored 13 points and teammate junior guard Amanda Young (Salem, NJ/St. James), who added 10 points to the Wagner efforts. The win, which is No. 22 for the Red Flash, set a single-season mark for wins at the school, breaking last year's mark of 21 for the season. |
