Staten Island, NY--Junior forwards Jess Zinobile (Lock Haven, PA) and Jen DeFilippo (Bethel Park, PA) scored 16 points apiece to lead Saint Francis College of Pennsylvania to a 71-56 victory over St. Francis College of New York in the quarterfinals of the Neutrogina T/Gel Northeast Conference Tournament Friday afternoon at the Spiro Sports Center on the campus of Wagner College.
The Red Flash moved to 16-11 overall and advanced to Sunday's semifinals against the winner of #3 Wagner College-#6 Quinnipiac. St. Francis of New York, led by senior center Carolyn Harvey (Brooklyn, NY) with 13 points and a game-high 17 rebounds and by sophomore forward Friederike Stenzel (Gladbach, Germany) with 10 points, ended its 1998-99 season with a 10-17 record.
DeFilippo came off the bench and scored 12 first-half points as the Red Flash took a 39-23 lead at intermission. She scored eight points during a 16-5 run that extended a 10-8 lead with 12:51 left to 26-13 with 6:26 remaining. Junior guard Kristy Balliet (Montgomery, PA) and sophomore guard Beth Barnabei (Weirton, WV) combined for 13 points as Saint Francis of Pennsylvania shot 62.1 percent (18 of 29) from the field and held a 15-13 rebounding advantage.
Saint Francis of Pennsylvania went on a 14-8 run in the first ten minutes of the second-half to extend its lead to 22, 53-31. The Terriers did manage to cut the margin to 14, 65-51, on back-to-back basket by Stenzel, but the Red Flash regrouped after a timeout and pushed the lead up to 20 points.
Harvey's "double-double" was her 15th of the season and the 21st of her career. The Terriers, who shot only 41 percent from the field (25 of 61), were guilty of 24 turnovers.
Zinobile, who now has 1,532 career points, finished with nine rebounds, seven assists and four steals in 31 minutes of action. The Red Flash also shot 51.8 percent (29 of 56) from the field and turned the ball over only 11 times. Saint Francis of Pennsylvania advanced to the quarterfinals of the NEC tournament for the sixth straight year.

Staten Island, NY--Junior forward Nia Ryan (Brooklyn, NY) scored a game-high 26 points, including 22 in the second-half, and had 12 rebounds to lift #3 Wagner College to an 80-62 victory over #6 Quinnipiac College in the quarterfinals of the Neutrogena T/Gel Northeast Conference Tournament Friday afternoon at the Spiro Sports Center.
Wagner, now 16-11, will face second-seeded Saint Francis College of Pensylvania, a 71-56 winner over St. Francis College of New York in the other quarterfinal tilt, on Sunday afternoon at 12:00 noon. The Seahawks also received 15 points from freshman center Meredith Kerns (Harrisburg, PA) and 12 from sophomore guard Deandra Teague (Wilmington, DE). Quinnipiac, which received 17 points from sophomore guard Colleen Klopp (Southington, CT) and 10 from junior guard Allison Pierce (Delran, NJ), ended its 1998-99 season with a 9-18 overall record.
There were three ties and eight lead changes in the first-half, before the Seahawks closed with a 10-6 run to take a 34-30 lead at intermission. Kerns led Wagner with 11 first-half points on five-for-five shooting from the field, and had five rebounds. Klopp paced Quinnipiac in the opening 20 minutes of play with 11 points.
Ryan scored 18 of the Seahawks' first 22 points in the second-half as Wagner extended its lead to 56-47 with less than eight minutes remaining. Wagner outscored the Braves 24-17 down the stretch to put the game away.
Ryan has scored 20-or-more points in nine straight games and recorded her third "double-double" of the season. Wagner shot 53.8 percent (14 of 26) from the field in the second-half to finish 48.3 percent for the game (28 of 58). Quinnipiac was only 10 of 26 from the field (38.5 percent) in the second-half and finished 40.7 percent (22 of 54) for the game.

Mount St. Mary's 80 Central Connecticut State 72

Staten Island, NY--Senior forward Megan Gardiner (Wilmington, DE) scored 25 points and pulled down 14 rebounds to lead #1 Mount St. Mary's College to an 80-72 victory over upset-minded and #8 Central Connecticut State University in the quarterfinals of the Neutrogena T/Gel Northeast Conference Tournament Saturday evening at the Spiro Sports Center on the campus of Wagner College.
The Mountaineers, the regular-season champion, improved to 21-6 overall and will advance to the semifinals Sunday afternoon against the winner of the Monmouth University-UMBC. Central Connecticut, which puts the wraps on an 11-16 season, was led by senior guard Vicki Guarneri (Toms River, NJ), who a game-high 26 points and eight rebounds and sophomore guard Nikki Flocco (Norristown, PA) and junior center Mary Maciulewski (Shelton, CT) with 15 and 13 points, respectively.
Mount St. Mary's led 7-0 early in the first-half, extended its lead to 15, 35-20, before CCSU hit four straight 3-point field goals, including two by Flocco, in the final 1:24 to cut the Mountaineers lead to five, 37-32, at intermission. Gardiner scored 12 points and pulled down nine rebounds in the opening 20 minutes of play.
The Lady Blue Devils battled back in the second-half and took their first lead of the game on a pair of free throws by junior guard Dianne Warner (S. Windsor, CT) with 12:41 remaining. Tied 60-60 with 7:37 remaining--the 7th tie of the game--the Mountaineers scored five straight points to take a 66-61 lead with 5:48 left.
Flocco hit a 3-pointer with 1:49 remaining that brought CCSU within two, 72-70, with 1:49 left. A layup by Jackie Banks (Roanoke, VA) and Gardiner sparked the Mountaineers on a 8-2 run in the final 1:23 set the final score.
Sophomore Deanna Butters (Old Bridge, NJ) added 15 points for Mount St. Mary's, which also received 11 points and seven rebounds from sophomore forward Kia Williams (Springdale, MD) and 10 points apiece from Banks and junior forward Vera Feldbusch (Santa Fe, NM). Mount St. Mary's shot 41.4 percent from the field (29 of 70) and committed only 13 turnovers. CCSU was guilty of 23 turnovers.

Staten Island, NY--Junior guard Audrey Taylor (South River, NJ) scored a game-high 20 points and sophomore guard Amanda Rosato (Old Bridge, NJ) added 17 points to lead #4 Monmouth University to a come-from-behind 69-67 victory over #4 University of Maryland-Baltimore County in the quarterfinals of the Neutrogena T/Gel Northeast Conference Tournament Saturday evening at the Spiro Sports Center on the campus of Wagner College.
The Hawks, now 15-12, will meet regular-season champion Mount St. Mary's, an 80-72 winner over Central Connecticut State University in the other quarterfinal tilt, Sunday afternoon at 2:00 p.m. Monmouth, which trailed 60-52 with less than nine minutes remaining, also received 15 points, eight rebounds and three assists from senior forward Shaliek Wright (Cranford, NJ). UMBC, which finished its 1998-99 season with a 13-14 record, was led by senior center Monica Logan (College Park, MD) with 18 points and 10 rebounds and freshman Jamie Lange (Mechanicsville, VA), who had 18 points and seven assists. Junior guard Kim Brown (Delran, NJ) and freshman forward Sheila Johnson (Upper Marlboro, MD) contributed 15 and 11 points, respectively, for UMBC, which shot 56.3 percent from beyond the 3-point arc but missed six free throws in the final 2:16.
The game was tied five times in the first-half before UMBC, sparked by eight points by Brown, went on a 15-6 run that resulted in a 41-33 lead at intermission. Taylor kept the Hawks within striking distance with 12 first-half points.
In the second-half, Monmouth went on a 17-5 run, which was capped by a layup by sophomore center Kristin Gartner (Woodbridge, VA), to take a 50-46 lead with 12:29 remaining. Behind five points by Lange, UMBC answered by going on a 14-2 run to open a 60-52 lead with 8:47 left.
Rosato canned a pair of 3-pointers during a 17-7 run that lifted the Hawks to victory. Monmouth tied it at 67-67 with 2:51 remaining on a 3-point play by freshman forward Michelle Cappodonna (Atlantic Highlands, NJ) and took the lead with 1:16 left on a baseline jump shot by Wright.

Staten Island, NY--Junior forward Jess Zinobile (Lock Haven, PA) had game-highs of 27 points and 12 rebounds to lead #2 Saint Francis College of Pennsylvania to a 73-65 victory over #3 Wagner College in the semifinals of the Neutrogena T/Gel Northeast Conference Tournament Sunday afternoon at the Spiro Sports Center.
The Red Flash, which improved to 17-11 overall, moved into the NEC title game for the sixth straight year and will face the winner of #1 Mount St. Mary's-#4 Monmouth University. Saint Francis, which overcame a seven-point second-half deficit, also received 13 points and 11 rebounds from junior forward Jen DeFilippo (Bethel Park, PA) and 16 points from senior guard Kristy Balliet (Montgomery, PA). Wagner, which closed out its 1998-99 season with a 16-12 record, was led by senior guard Amanda Young (Salem, NJ) with 24 points and junior forward Nia Ryan (Brooklyn, NY) had 16 points and 10 rebounds.

The Red Flash scored the final four points of the half--on a put-back by sophomore guard Deanna Jubeck (Altoona, PA) and two free throws by Zinobile--to cut the margin to 38-34 at intermission.
Young had 12 points and Ryan 10 at halftime as Wagner shot 63.6 percent (14 of 22) from the field, including 66.7 percent (6 of 9) from beyond the arc.
The Seahawks increased their lead to seven twice in the second-half, the last time coming at the 14:04 mark on a 3-point field goal by sophomore guard Deandra Teague (Wilmington, DE), who finished with nine points and seven assists. Zinobile then scored seven straight points to tie the contest, 44-44, with 11:53 remaining. After a five-point spurt by Wagner, Saint Francis finshed the game with a 29-16 run. DeFilippo, who scored 11 of her 13 points in the second-half, and Zinobile, who had 19 second-half points, keyed the late spurt by scoring nine points apiece.
The Red Flash, three-time defending Northeast Conference champions, hit 13 of 17 free throws in the second-half and 17 of 23 for the game.

Staten Island, NY--Sophomore guard Amanda Rosato (Old Bridge, NJ) scored 18 points and senior forward Shaliek Wright (Cranford, NJ) and junior guard Audrey Taylor (South River, NJ) added 15 apiece to lead #4 Monmouth University to a 76-66 upset over #1 Mount St. Mary's College on Sunday afternoon in the semifinals of the Neutrogena T/Gel Northeast Conference Tournament at the Spiro Sports Center on the campus of Wagner College.
The Hawks, now 16-12, will advance to Monday evening's championship game against #2 Saint Francis College of Pennsylvania, a 73-65 winner over #3 Wagner College in the other semifinal game. Mount St. Mary's, which put the wraps on a 21-7 season, was led by NEC player of the year and senior forward Megan Gardiner (Wilmington, DE) with 22 points and 14 rebounds and junior guard Vera Feldbusch (Santa Fe, NM) added 20 points.
Monmouth, which led from start to finish, built up a 42-31 lead at halftime by shooting 62.5 percent from the field in the opening 20 minutes of play. Mount St. Mary's, led by Gardiner's 12 points and eight rebounds in the first-half, canned just 10 of 34 field goal attempts (29.4 percent) in the first-half.
The Mountaineers eventually cut the Monmouth lead to five late in the second-half on a pair of free throws by Gardiner with 1:51 left. The Hawks then hit five free throws down the stretch to seal the win.
Sophomore forward Katie Kostohryz (Athens, OH) added 12 points for Monmouth, which also received an 8-point, 15-rebound, 4-assist effort from freshman forward Michelle Cappadona (Atlantic Highlands, NJ) off the bench. The win moved Monmouth into the NEC championship game for the first time since 1997. The Hawks lost to Saint Francis that year, 69-56, at the DeGol Arena in Loretto, Pennsylvania.

Staten Island, NY--Junior forward Jess Zinobile (Lock Haven, PA) scored 33 points and pulled down 17 rebounds--both game-highs--to lead Saint Francis College of Pennsylvania to an 88-76 victory over Monmouth University in the championship game of the 1999 Neutrogena T/Gel Northeast Conference Tournament Monday evening at the Spiro Sports Center on the campus of Wagner College in Staten Island, New York.
Zinobile, who was selected the tournament's Most Valuable Player (MVP), scored 25 points in the second-half as the three-time defending champion Red Flash overcame a 35-32 halftime deficit. Saint Francis, which became the first school to win four NEC titles, also received 20 points and nine rebounds from all-tournament selection and junior forward Jen DeFilippo (Bethel Park, PA), 13 points from sophomore guard Beth Barnabei (Weirton, WV) and 10 from sophomore guard Kristin Cirigliano (Upper Holland, PA). The Red Flash will receive an automatic bid to the NCAA tournament. Monmouth, which ended its 1998-99 season with a 16-13 record, was led by freshman forward Michelle Cappadona (Atlantic Highlands, NJ) with 27 points and sophomore guard Amanda Rosato (Old Bridge, NJ) added 14 points.
The Red Flash, behind five points by Barnabei and four by Zinobile, jumped out to an early 17-7 lead in the opening seven minutes of the first-half, before Cappadona came off the bench and sparked the Hawks on a 28-15 run to end the half and give Monmouth a four-point lead. Cappadonna scored 13 points and the Hawks held a 26-18 rebounding margin in the opening 20 minutes of play.
Saint Francis regained the lead early in the second-half and eventually built up a 10-point advantage, 65-55, with less than eight minutes remaining. Zinobile scored five points during a 9-0 run over the next three minutes that pushed the lead to 19, 74-55, with 5:03 left. Monmouth cut the lead to 11, 81-70, on a 3-point by Cappadona with 2:35 left, the closest the Hawks would get the rest of the way.
Zinobile earned her second MVP award. In 1997, as a freshman, she was named the Most Valuable Player after leading the Red Flash to wins over Robert Morris, Mount St. Mary's and Monmouth.
