Plainville, MA -- Trausti Thorsteins reclaimed what was initially his 28 months ago while leading Wagner to a repeat team title at the Northeast Conference men’s cross-country championship.
Spearheading the Seahawks’ narrow team win over Central Connecticut, Thorsteins completed the 8K course at Heather Hill Country Club in 24:28.70. The Icelandic-born harrier was the first of four Wagner scorers in the Top 8 on Sunday, capturing his second individual crown in three tries.
After winning the race as a freshman on October 27, 2018, Thorsteins settled for individual runner-up honors while boosting Wagner to the 2019 team title.
Now, he’s No. 1 again and so is his team.
Wagner’s 41 team score allowed Joe Stasi’s crew to successfully defend the championship it claimed on November 2, 2019.
Nine-time champion Central Connecticut (43) took second place followed by 2018 team champion Mount St. Mary’s in third. Meet host Bryant (97) was fourth in the seven-team field.
Mount’s Will Merritt crossed the line in 24:34.80, finishing as the individual runner-up. Fellow Mountie John Wang claimed third place.
Staten Islander Anthony Bentivegna was Wagner’s next finisher after Thorsteins. The first-year Seahawk finished sixth overall en-route to capturing the NEC Most Outstanding Rookie Performer award.
