NEC WOMEN'S BASKETBALL PLAYER OF THE WEEK
Lytoya Baker, Le Moyne
Guard, Fifth Year, 5-9, Rochester, NY/Bishop Kearney
Baker made the transition to Division I look seamless this past week, and as a result, she makes Le Moyne history by becoming the first-ever player to garner a weekly award from the NEC. The Dolphins’ fifth-year guard registered double figures in scoring in each of Le Moyne’s first three Division I contests to average 15.3 points on 40.5 percent shooting from the field (15-of-37) during that stretch. A 5-foot-9 guard from Rochester, NY, Baker got her season and Division I career going with a bang against Colorado State. Registering a pair of blocks while going 2-for-3 from three to finish with 17 points, she hauled in 10 rebounds to complete the double-double. Two days later against No. 20 Colorado, a team that was riding the coat tails of a win over defending NCAA Champion LSU, Baker went 6-of-10 from the field for a season-best 18-point effort. She closed out her week by stuffing the stat sheet with 11 points, six rebounds, three assists and three steals against Stony Brook on Saturday. Baker is second in the NEC in scoring behind Saint Francis U’s Kaitlyn Maxwell (15.5 ppg), while her 6.33 rebounds per game are good for seventh in the circuit.
NEC WOMEN'S BASKETBALL ROOKIE OF THE WEEK
Janessa Williams, LIU
Guard, Fr., 5-9, Lake Worth, FL/The King’s Academy
Facing some stiff competition in the likes of one Big East team and a Big 10 squad, Williams did not shy away in her collegiate debut. The 5-foot-9 guard averaged 8.0 points and 5.0 rebounds during that stretch. Starting her career by contributing eight points and seven rebounds to a defeat at St. John’s on opening day, Williams put up the first double-figure scoring game of her career two days later after dropping 10 points in a setback at Minnesota. The Lake Worth, FL native closed out the week strong, delivering six points and six rebounds against Iona on Sunday. Williams went 41.2 percent from the field (7-of-17) and added four steals for the Sharks.
NEC PRIME PERFORMERS
Teneisia Brown, FDU (F/C, Sr.)
Brown averaged 13.0 points on 52.2 percent shooting from the field (12-of-23) while adding 4.0 rebounds, 1.5 blocks and 1.5 steals per contest in her FDU debut last week. The senior forward/center netted 10 points in the Knights’ defeat to NCAA Tournament runner-up Iowa on Monday before she pitched in 16 points on 8-of-11 shooting in a setback at Army on Sunday.
Lytoya Baker, LEM (G, 5th-Year)
Baker dropped double figures in scoring in Le Moyne’s first three games as a Division I member and averaged 15.3 points and 6.3 rebounds during that stretch. Dropping a double-double against Colorado State (17 points, 10 rebounds), the veteran guard’s impressive week was highlighted by an 18-point effort against No. 20 Colorado, a team that downed defending national champion LSU earlier in the week on opening day. Baker also made program history by becoming the first-ever Le Moyne player to garner NEC Player of the Week honors.
Kaitlyn Maxwell, SFU (G, Sr.)
Maxwell made a strong return to the Saint Francis U lineup after missing the 2022-23 campaign with an injury. Knocking down seven three pointers at a 70.0 percent clip while finishing the week shooting 52.4 percent (11-of-21), the veteran guard scored 18 points in the Red Flash’s season opener against Robert Morris on Monday before she contributed 13 points to a defeat at Canisius on Saturday.
