
In the championship game of the NEC men's basketball tournament, top-seeded Monmouth rode the play of sophomore guard Tyler Azzarelli, who scored a career-high 19 points, to a 67-55 triumph over #7 Central Connecticut State in West Long Branch, NJ on Wednesday. The Hawks (21-11) captured their third NEC title and claimed the league's automatic bid to the NCAA Tournament. On Saturday, the St. Francis (PA) women's team won its third straight NEC championship and eighth in the last nine seasons with a 70-55 triumph over #3 Monmouth in Loretto, PA. Tournament MVP Tonjee Ward led the way for the Red Flash (25-5) with 24 points, nine rebounds and seven steals. Both the men's and women's winners will find out their postseason opponents on Sunday evening during their respective NCAA selection shows.
