NEC PLAYER OF THE WEEK
DENIA DAVIS-STEWART, MERRIMACK
Sr., F, 6-1, Dorchester, MA/New Mission
Week 8 Stats: 1 start, 21 points, 22 rebounds, 5 blocks, .615 FG pct.
Davis-Stewart closed out 2019 in fitting fashion, increasing her Northeast Conference lead in both scoring and rebounding with her first 20-20 performance of the season. The senior forward totaled 21 points and 22 rebounds in a 78-53 triumph over America East member Vermont. In addition to becoming the first NEC player to break the 20-rebound barrier this season, Davis-Stewart blocked at least five shots for the seventh time in her first 11 games at the Division I level. The 6-foot-1 senior shot 61.5 percent from the floor and made all four of her free throw attempts in 37 minutes against the Catamounts. She finished the game with only five fewer rebounds than Vermont’s entire lineup. Davis-Stewart is currently one of nine Division I players with at least eight double-doubles this season. Her 5.00 blocks per game average stands second only to the mark that Texas Tech’s Brittany Brewer owns (6.27 bpg).
NEC ROOKIE OF THE WEEK
ALANA FURSMAN, MERRIMACK
Fr., F, 5-11, Pittsford, NY/Pittsford Mendon
Week 8 Stats: 1 appearance, 12 points, 5 rebounds, 3 assists, .667 FG pct.
Fursman came off the bench to score a career-high 12 points during Merrimack’s runaway victory over America East member Vermont. The freshman forward shot 66.7 percent from the field, including a 2-for-2 clip from downtown, in the 78-53 triumph. She also secured five caroms and dished out three assists over 22 minutes of floor time. Fursman erupted midway through the second quarter, single-handedly out-scoring Vermont by a 9-0 margin over a 1:36 spurt that bumped Merrimack’s lead to 14 points with 4:46 remaining in the opening half. The rookie, who entered the game with only two three-point field goals to her credit, hit two triples only 1:09 apart during the second period.
