NEC SWIMMER OF THE WEEK
Valentina Gomez, Central Connecticut
So., Harrisonburg, VA/Hudson Catholic
Gomez made it back-to-back NEC Swimmer of the Week accolades after racking up three individual race wins in a tri-meet against Bryant and Wagner. The sophomore continued her dominance in the 100 and 200 butterfly as well as the 1650 freestyle, posting times in each event that are all faster than any NEC swimmer this season. Gomez touched in 2:06:22 in the 200 butterfly, more than four seconds faster than the runner-up, and her 1650 finish of 17:43.63 bested the field by over seven seconds. Gomez, who hails from Harrisonburg, VA, was also first to touch the wall in the 100 butterfly, clocking in at 58.42 seconds. In addition, she helped the Blue Devils set a pool record time in winning the 400 medley relay (3:55.22).
NEC DIVER OF THE WEEK
Kelci Abernethy, Bryant
Jr., Chandler, AZ/Perry
The three-time NEC Diver of the Week won both her events over the weekend in a tri-meet against Central Connecticut and Wagner. Abernethy dominated the field in the 3-meter dive with a score of 247.70, which was almost 16 points better than the second place diver. The Chandler, AZ product narrowly edged teammate Carissa Stemen in the 1-meter dive with a 242.45 score.
NEC ROOKIE OF THE WEEK
Alexa Rivera, Bryant
Fr., Boynton Beach, FL/Oxbridge Academy
Rivera won three races in Bryant's tri-meet with NEC contenders Central Connecticut and Wagner. The freshman from Boynton Beach, FL completed her three individual races with times that all rank among the top-5 in the NEC this season. Her 200 IM (2:08.97) and 100 free (53.12) finishes rank second and fourth, respectively, while Rivera's 100 backstroke time (59.01) stacks up fifth among conference rivals.
NEC PRIME PERFORMERS
SFU senior Katie Lafferty (Bremen, IN/Bremen) took first in three individual events to go along with a 200 freestyle relay win that helped the Red Flash overcome LIU Brooklyn over the weekend. Lafferty won the 100 backstroke by over four seconds posting a time of 57.78 that tops the NEC so far this season. She also was first to touch the wall in both the 100 free (53.03) and the 500 free (5:13.35).
CCSU junior Aidan Devers (North Attleboro, MA/North Attleboro) registered first place times in both the 500 free (5:10.99) and 100 backstroke (58.23) that each rank among the top-four of the conference so far this season. She also took second in the 400 IM.
CCSU senior Maddy Garber (Milford, MA/Milford) claimed both breaststroke events winning in the 100 (1:05.42) and 200 (2:23.68) in a meet with Wagner and Bryant. The times are faster than any other NEC swimmer so far this season.
