Geneva, OH -- The Sharks bared their teeth to kick off the evening, but Howard remain composed and concluded day four of the 2023 NEC Men's Swimming & Diving Championhips with a comfortable lead over LIU headed into the final day of competition at Spire Institute in Geneva, OH.

With just six events remaining, Howard remained atop the team leaderboard with 644 points, giving the Bison a 77 point cushion over LIU (567) . St. Francis Brooklyn (445) and Wagner (369) rounded out the four-team field.

LIU began the evening session with a dominant showing in the 200 yard butterfly. Sweeping the podium, Benny Karlsson took gold with a time of 1:51.31, followed by teammate Marcell Matyiko who touched the wall in 1:51.50. Dani Chocano Fernandez clocked in at 1:51.62 for third place.

LIU's 53-point performance marked the second podium sweep of this year’s NEC Championship and first on the men’s side.

Miles Simon collected 20 points for Howard after covering the 100 backstroke in 47.80, just 0.06 second behind the meet record. Wagner’s Kaan Nalcaci filled the second spot on the podium, swimming a 48.62, followed by third place finisher Tristan Stevens of Howard with a time of 49.33.

Down to the touch! In what was the tightest race of the evening, Howard's Darin Johnson took gold in the 100 yard breaststroke with a time of 55.32. In second place was LIU’s Giannis Venetos, who touched the wall in 55.44 and Howard's Mark-Anthony Thompson swam a 55.58 to take bronze. The eight finishers were separate by less than a second.

The evening wrapped up with the only broken record of the session in the 400 yard medley relay. Howard's Tristan Stevens (49.89), Darin Johnson (54.18), Arion Solomon (48.54) and Mark-Anthony Beckles (43.94) set a new conference standard after navigating the race in 3:16.55. Finishing in second place was the LIU quartet of Benny Karlsson (50.31), Giannis Venetos (54.10), Alejandro Pascual Del Cid (48.66) and Emilio Garcia (44.06) that touched at 3:17.13. In third, Wagner posted a 3:21.29 behind the team of Kaan Nalcaci (49.45), Joel Knapp (55.19), Adrian Aguirre (49.53) and Andrew Strickland (47.12).

The NEC Men's Swimming and Diving Championships will resume on Saturday morning at 10:00 am with the 1650 freestyle, 100 freestyle, 200 backstroke, 200 breaststroke, 3-meter diving, and 400 freestyle relay. Finals begin at 6:00 pm.
