Geneva, OH -- Howard set records left and right all week long, so it seems fitting the Bison have now written their name into the NEC recordbooks by claiming the program's first NEC Men's Swimming & Diving championship.
Through five days of competition at Spire Institute in Geneva, OH, Howard accumulated 928 points, winning by a comfortable 169 point margin. LIU (759) was the runner-up. followed by St. Francis Brooklyn (634) and Wagner (539).
Wagner’s Ruben Van Gool posted a winning time of 15:55.17 in the 1650 yard freestyle to kick off the final day. Silver medalist Luke-Kennedy Thompson from Howard touched at 16:03.56, and was followed by LIU’s Lincoln Greseth, who finished third in 16:04.09.
In the closest swim of the evening, it came down to the touch n the 100 freestyle, but Howard’s Mark-Anthony Beckles tapped the wall first to match the meet record with a time of 44.33. In second place was LIU’s Alejandro Pascual Del Cid with a time of 44.54 and Daniel Matheus Santos from St. Francis Brooklyn took the bronze in 44.89.
Howard's Miles Simon completed his 2023 NEC Championship experience taking gold in every event he competed in to earn NEC Swiimer of the Meet honors. In the 200 yard backstroke, heposted a winning time of 1:46.35, and was followed by Wagner's Kaan Nalcaci, who clocked a 1:47.15. Nalcaci was tabbed the NEC Rookie of the Meet. Taking bronze was SFBK's Robert Wagner in 1:49.18.
Breaking two minutes in the 200 yard breaststroke was LIU’s Stephen Taylor, who touched first with a time of 1:59.82. Howard’s Niles Rankin earned his first medal of the championship week after finishing second with a time of 2:02.91. LIU's Giannis Venetos swam a 2:03.30 to claim third.
Howard’s Jordan Walker swept the diving boards and tonight set a new meet record in the three-meter dive. The NEC Diver of the Meet totaled 277.25 points to enjoy a comfortable 44.45 cushion over runner-up. Matthew Bernstein of St. Francis Brooklyn, who racked up 232.80 points for a silver medal. Wagner's Carter Green completed the top three in the diving event with a score of 223.15.
The NEC Championship concluded with a new record in the 400 yard freestyle relay. Howard's Miles Simon (43.47), Spencer Miles (44.47), Arion Solomon (45.53) and Mark-Anthony Beckles (43.90) set a new conference standard after navigating the race in 2:57.66. Finishing in second place was the St. Francis Brooklyn squad of Toni Dragoja (44.42), Valentin Schnermann (45.33), Maurice Grabowski (45.17) and Daniel Matheus Santos (44.21) that touched at 2:59.13 and also broke the previous meet mark. LIU finished third and posted a 3:00.84 behind the team of Emilio Garcia (44.79), Drew Ladner (45.71), Porter LeVasseur (45.96) and Alejandro Pascual Del Cid (44.38).
