NEC Community Showcase

The Northeast Conference, its member institutions and student-athletes have made community involvement an important piece of its mission.

The annual Northeast Conference Student-Athlete Advisory Committee meeting returned to Hershey Park, PA, but the two-day event was more about service than sweets. When not discussing proposed NCAA legislation or sharing best practices, the group of 20 student-athletes and five administrators spent time at the Children’s Cancer Recovery Foundation, which is headquartered in Harrisburg. During their visit, NEC SAAC leaders hand-delivered a $7,532.94 check to the Children’s Cancer Recovery Foundation and also volunteered time to preparing care packages that went to children around the nation. The monetary donation to the Foundation, which assists children under age 18 and their families who are facing the hardships of a cancer diagnosis, was comprised of funds raised from the NEC SAAC’s annual Penny Wars.

For the first time, St. Francis Brooklyn was the recipient of the NEC Building Communities award.  The award recognizes the institution which demonstrates the highest dedication to making an impact in the community through the efforts of its student-athletes, coaches and administrators.  Over the course of the 2014-15 academic year, Conference members logged nearly 25,000 hours of community service.

The NEC SAAC retooled its “Penny Wars” initiative for 2014-15, rebranding it “Money Wars” to support the children’s Cancer Recovery Foundation.  The conference-wide community service fund-raising initiative raised $11,587.17, an all-time high for the NEC and a 54 percent increase from the 2013-14 academic year.  Mount St. Mary’s led the charge and received the Money Wars trophy by raising $2,900.

Wagner football player Phil Faccone and Robert Morris softball player Nicole Sleith were named the 2014-15 NEC Male and Female Student-Athletes of the Year, respectively.  The SAAC chair sits on the voting panel for the award, which recognizes individual excellence in both the academic and athletic realms as well as leadership and contributions to one’s community.
